Why You Need to Choose the Right Contractor, Not the Cheapest One
By Ryan Listerman
The right contractor will help you avoid headaches and save money.
When your project is in need of repair, you need a contractor you can trust. However, many homeowners don’t know where to start. Do you start with your finances or with online reviews? Is it better to start getting a handful of quotes? It’s not easy to choose the right contractor in, but it is easy to choose the wrong one.
Horror stories of terrible contractors are a dime in a dozen. Huge messes after the project are completed, missing materials, leakage, no shows, lack of communication – the list goes on and on. These horror stories give contractors in a bad name. Unfortunately, many of these horror stories could have been avoided if the homeowners knew how to pick the right contractor. In order to avoid falling victim to a bad project experience, you must choose the right contractor.
It’s important to avoid costly pitfalls when you are choosing your contractor. The old adage, “You get what you pay for,” is true. The cheapest contractor has the potential to be a great contractor. However, this just typically isn’t the case.
When it comes to choosing a contractor, homeowners have fears. Most – if not all – individuals experience the following fears:
- “The contractor is going to rip me off and run away with my hard earned money.”
- “The project quote is high. The contractor is charging me way too much for this!”
- “What happens if the contractor doesn’t finish the project? Are we going to have to live with a broken project?”
- “What if the project isn’t done correctly? I don’t want a leaky project! I can’t afford to pay for a project twice.”
All of these fears are completely valid, especially if you have been the victim of a dishonest contractor (or any kind of contractor) in the past. However, these fears shouldn’t prevent you from an in-depth search for the right contractor. When you find the right contractor, all of these fears should be put to rest.
Contractors – especially the bad ones – are known for making a lot of promises. For some contractors, they need to make the sale and get a deposit in order to have enough to fund another client’s project repair. Others have every intention of doing a great job, but they just aren’t cut out for being a contractor.
When homeowners fall victim to bad contractors in, it creates a laundry list of headaches that just seem to pile on one after another. Some of these include:
- Messy Job Site
- Missed Deadlines
- Damaged Property
- Unfulfilled Promises
- Constant Delays
- And Many, Many More Headaches
If you think your kids’ rooms are messy, the fallout from a bad contractor will shock you. Nails, shingles, and more will be littered in your yard. If you’re lucky, none of your property will experience damage from the fallout. Missed deadlines can cause numerous delays, which will put a damper on when you can have guests stay in your home (unless they are okay with visiting while a contractor is working on your project).
The wrong contractor is nothing but problems for you and your family. You need to choose one of the contractors who is focused on providing you with a positive experience and a quality project within the deadlines they provide you.
The right contractor for your project isn’t always dependent on price. There are a number of factors that determine who is the right contractor for your business, which we will discuss in another blog post. The right contractor is one who fulfills their promises, provides up-front pricing, and keeps open lines of communication.
Aside from receiving a quality project within the deadline, additional benefits that come with choosing the right contractor for your project include:
- Fast, Reliant Communication
- Clean Work Area
- Project Updates
- High Quality Materials
- Permits Acquired and City Guidelines Met
Whether you need a residential or commercial project, you need to choose the right contractor for the job. With the right contractor, you will save yourself time, money, and headaches.
